Hardcover edition. ISBN: 9780715363461.

This illustrated history of French, English and American bronzes of the period 1830 to 1915 displays the richness and scope of a largely unexplored field in the study of sculpture. There is, in fact, no other book in English that deals with the subject as a whole - sentimental marble staturary and jingoistic public monuments appear to have caused critics to dismiss the period summarily. However, concentration on the Romantic style permits exclusion of the mid-Victorian neo-classical sculptors and, at the other end of hte period, of the sculptors who ceased to conform to the traditional human realism of sculptural form and experimented with abstract forms - Rodin, the initiator of this modern movement, is the last sculptor to be dealt with in stylistic terms. There is also a chapter on the French Animaliers bronzes.
Thus defined, the author relates his subject to the political, social and artistic history of the nineteenth century, discussing every sculptor of note in the context of the general stylistic development and giving biographical details in all cases. This was a period of prolific production and accelerated invention, aided by a greater interaction between the artists of different generations and countries, but sculpture, unlike painting, was slow to assume the characteristics of Romantic art. Gradually, however, an admiration of nature and concern for the human predicament expressed itself in a growing involvement with movement of surface and form in bronze.
This richly illustrated book provides the reader with the basic visual and historic understanding to further his own personal enjoyment of some glorious bronzes. Over 150 outstanding photographs in both colour and black-and-white, along with a market guide, make it a significant contribution to the history and appreciation of art, and an invaluable aid for the collector.
Jeremy Cooper is head of the Furniture and Works of Art department at Sothebys, London (the only auctioneers in the world specialising in the subject of this book), where cataloguing of all nineteenth-century bronzes and sculpture keeps him in continuous contact with other collectors and experts in the field.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0627/8139/0901/files/9780715363461_a996b865-ae9e-49d0-bfe2-9f421cd8a24a.jpg?v=1778892092
https://atxbooks.com/products/nineteenthcentury-romantic-bronzes-french-english-and-american-bronzes-18301915-9780715363461
