Reared on a stock ranch near Cassoday  Kansas  he has lived in the Flint Hills area all of his life except for graduate school in Missouri and a teaching stint in Idaho. Jim is a folklorist and 5th-generation Flint Hills rancher who can often be found cowboying on son Joshs Flying W Ranch. The Flying W is a 7000-acre working cattle ranch in Chase County offering guest ranching services to people wanting to experience the Flint Hills and cowboy culture.
