This collection of interpreted photographs in this volume is a remarkable pictorial memory of small-town America, from the 1870s up into the 1930s. Specifically it is Southbridge, a small manufacturing town in south central Massachusetts; generally speaking, it is a view of countless other small towns throughout the United States, which shared common features of business, entertainment, and the human life cycle. Reproduced here are 1249 illustrations, more than half of which originate before 1900. Among them are several panoramas which convey whole townscapes. Mr. Arthur J.
