The book begins with an explanation of the types of Kansas barns, and then the author devotes a chapter to barns in each section of Kansas, beginning from the northeast. Most photos are of existing barns, in color, such as the one with steel tracks on the roof and a hay door painted with a very attractive pattern called Horses Run from Pharaohs Fire. Some historical b/w photos remind the reader of the tough life of an old-time farmer; for instance, the owner of the Collingwood barn is shown in an early automobile, with the remark: "Driving a car like this could require work: note the three spare tires strapped to the back."
