"Chez les Français" provides ample opportunity for the kinds of reading, listening, speaking, and writing that are needed to develop spontaneity, fluency and on-the-spot comprehension in the study of the French language. Of course, one needs some equipment to be able to do this. One needs to be able to recognize the grammatical clues in the sentence and one needs to know some words in the sentence in order to be able to guess sensibly at the meaning of less familiar ones. The large number of drawings and photographs in the book will provide additional clues for the comprehension of the conversations, scenes, and reports. Except for two chapters where the focus is on the American scene, all the photographs were taken in France for use in this study. The idea of "reading" a photograph may be new, but it is an interesting and profitable way to derive meaning and gain a better understanding and greater appreciation of many aspects of French life and language.
