This book has been written for three audiences. First, it serves as an introduction to community ecology for readers familiar with general ecology. Second, it seeks to portray the present state of the field and to formulate empirical and theoretical problems in need of solutions, for practicing ecologists. Since major issues in community ecology remain unresolved, different chapters of this volume present differing methods, models, or perspectives. Third, we hope to stimulate scientists in other areas of biology to help solve outstanding problems of community ecology and make more use of what is now known.
