Door County is truly one of the treasures of Wisconsin attracting millions of visitors with its beauty peacefulness and small-town atmosphere. This area did not always thrive on tourism however and various industries have always played an important part in its history. Ships and shipbuilding have been very important in Door County and many ships have been lost in Deaths Door at the northern tip of the Door Peninsula. Farmers moved into Door County and many achieved prosperity. Today many farmers have given up their trade to become a part of the summer resort industry which is the dominant economy attracting some two million vacationers and visitors annually.
