Escape into Danger is my true story, starting with my departure from Poland at age 17 in the summer of 1939, one month before World War II erupted. It ends with my return after the war in 1946. In between is the tale of my struggles for survival – in POW camps in Germany, my two escapes from them, my recapture in Franco’s Spain, my one and half years in a Spanish concentration camp – and finally my experiences as a Polish Merchant Mariner in the remaining war years. The story is studded with flashbacks of events from my childhood in Poland, which were character-forming and influential in my survival.
