In the difficult years following World War I the Elkhardt family in Bavaria experiences increasing turmoil in their lives as they try to move forward in a nation deeply divided. Suffering the devastating impact of defeat in the Great War the people of Germany must find a solution to dire economic conditions -- particularly skyrocketing inflation -- resulting from the countrys staggering war reparation dictated by the Treaty of Versailles.
