About this book

FOR LOVE OF THE LAND by MARY BUFORD HITZ. hardcover edition. ISBN: 9781938205248.

For Love of the Land is a hardcover, full-color history of the Wintergreen Resort, one of the first environmentally conscious developments in the country. The book explores the dreams and realities that led to the inception and development of Wintergreen, a resort and residential community placed upon 11,000 acres of historic and pristine land in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia. This land’s primary boundaries have been intact since the 18th century, preserving ancient ecosystems, archaeological sites, and a unique cultural history. Wintergreen was conceived during a time period when many contemporary environmental regulations did not exist, but it was developed during a time of environmental awakening. Wintergreen’s success is a tribute to prominent Virginians whose personalities and leadership were crucial in setting the foundation for the Wintergreen of today. Mary Buford Hitz is a free-lance journalist who has written for the Washington Post, the Richmond Times Dispatch and regional magazines. For the greater part of two years she has been part of a five-member committee that collected interviews, documents, photographs, and stories about the 40-year history of Wintergreen Resort, one of the first environmentally conscious developments in the country. For Love of the Land is also available at the Wintergreen Foundation gift shop and website, www.twnf.org.
