About this book

Foster Girl, A Memoir by Todd, Georgette. paperback edition. ISBN: 9780615710808.

FOSTER GIRL opens with a bullet to the head, along with a family history of abandonment, alcoholism, drug use, abuse, incarcerations, and death, all of which force Georgette and her younger sister into the foreign world of foster care. From there, Georgette has no choice but to raise herself and her sister through a series of institutional residences and foster homes. Complete with transcribed court documents, letters, photos, and narration by a spirited yet desperate teenager, Foster Girl recreates a wildly unpredictable coming-of-age story of one girl’s struggle to survive long enough for life after foster care. Through a uniquely unfiltered voice, Foster Girl reveals what it feels like to grow up in foster care. Readers will come away from this book with a better understanding of how the foster care system works and what we can all do to make a difference. GEORGETTE TODD has a BA in English and Journalism, attended law school, and has an MFA in English, Non-Fiction Creative Writing from Mills College. Her writing has been featured on National Public Radio and in the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Sacramento News & Review, and other publications. She has been interviewed on television and radio and has starred in a documentary about foster care. In 2011, Georgette was honored for her work in co-creating the first youth advocacy county integrated program in America, a pioneering achievement in child welfare history. Currently, she lives in a beach community in Southern California. Georgette is working on several projects, one of them a complement book to Foster Girl.
