A story about a Marine gunnery Sargeant Percy Eugene "Gunny" Brandon, who joined the Marine Corp January, 1953, and served until May, 1969 when he was temporarily retired. He was sent home to recover from fourth-time wounds and was retired April 1, 1973 with over twenty years service. The Brandon family came to Oregon from South Dakota, five brothers (all of whom served in the military) and four sisters. Brothers John and Gary served in the Navy, Bill in the Air Force, and Howard "Stubby" and Percy in the Marines. Stubby was killed in Iwo Jima. The Brandons were of mixed blood within the Rosebud Sioux and Cree Indian tribes. Percy "Gunny" was raised and schooled in Grand Ronde and Willamina, Oregon. Gunny served during the Korean and Vietnamese conflicts as a company gunnery sergeant with the Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, known as the "Magnificent Bastards." Their mission involved patrolling the demilitarized zone (DMZ).
