About this book

Historic Glensheen 1905-1930: Photographs from the Congdon Estate's First 25 Years by Dierckins, Tony. paperback edition. ISBN: 9781887317429.

GLENSHEEN’S FIRST 25 YEARS! This book contain 115 photographs―nearly all made between 1905 and 1930―of Glensheen, the historic Congdon family estate along the shore of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota. Several images show the house under construction between 1905 and 1908. Many were taken in 1909, the first full year the Congdons lived in the house, capturing the newly decorated home and its surroundings just as Clara and Chester Congdon had first envisioned them. Later photos, taken in the late 1920s, show how the 22-acre estate’s landscaped grounds had become a lush veil of greenery that provided more of the privacy cherished by widow Clara Hesperia Congdon. This historic photo tour includes most of the mansion’s 39 rooms from all four of its floors, including the library, den, living room, dining room, breakfast room, recreation room, and every bed and guest room; The main house and its surrounding estate grounds, including the stone bridge over Tischer Creek, and beyond into Duluth’s Congdon Park, created on land donated by Chester Congdon; the boathouse and pier, gardener’s cottage, and carriage house, as well as the four greenhouses now lost to time; Carriages, early autos, and the family yacht, the Hesperia.
