Fuchs, a German adventurer and sailor, set out in 2000 in a 22-foot wooden lifeboat with three companions to retrace Ernest Shackletons 1914 effort to cross Antarctica. It took Shackleton and his crew two years to get out after they lost their ship to ice; Fuchs party made a 150-mile journey from Esperanza Bay to Elephant Island and South Georgia, then, like Shackleton, crossed over South Georgias glaciers and mountains on foot.
