About this book

In the shadow of the rising sun by Judy Hyland. paperback edition. ISBN: 9780806620916.

Personal account of an American missionary who intended to go to China but had to detour to the Philippines in 1940 because of the Sino-Japanese War. She and her fellow missionaries continued to prepare for China and took Chinese lessons in Manila, later in Baguio. The outbreak of the war caught her in Baguio and she was interned with other Americans in Camp John Hay at first, followed by Camp Holmes. She describes conditions in Baguio at the start of the war, the arrival of the Japanese and internment, what life was like on a typical day, new friends, new recipes. The internees were transferred to Bilibid Prison in Manila in December 1944, and were freed when American liberation forces reached them in February 1945. Her faith was strengthened by the experience, and after the war she, together with her husband, served as missionaries in Japan.
