About this book

Island of the Cowboys - Santa Rosa Island by KERRY BLANKENSHIP ALLEN (Editor). paperback edition. ISBN: 9781886342033.

Santa Rosa is the second largest of Southern Californias Channel Islands, situated 26 miles off the coast of Santa Barbara. The islands earliest known human inhabitants were the Chumash Indians. Their society was vulnerable to both diseases and economic changes introduced by European contact and by 1820 not a single Chumash lived on the island and became private property in 1843. Later owners developed the islands ranching. In 1986 the Federal Government purchased Santa Rosa Island from the last private owners and made it part of the Channel Islands National Park. This work (published as Occasional Paper Number 7 of the Santa Cruz Island Foundation) is composed from a collection of historic reports and overviews (including archaeological, botanic and entomological), accounts, letters, stories from the 1850s till the 1990s with a foreword (by Marla Daily), an introduction, a map, a great number of historic photographs and notes.
