The main purpose of this work is to provide description and analysis of the most important aspects of the theory and practice of operational warfare, in support of core curricula. Another aim is to provide a single volume reference for operational commanders and their planners. Despite its scope, this work contains only a fraction of what one needs to know and understand on any given aspect of operational warfare. The author’s intent was, by using diverse and open sources, to provide a synthesis of the most important theoretical and practical aspects of operational warfare conducted by multi-service and multi-national forces. Although the focus is on conventional high-intensity conflict, many aspects of operational warfare applied in low-intensity conflict and operations short of war are discussed and explained as well. This work represents solely the author’s interpretation of the selected literature on the subject. Readers should critically review these interpretations, read other sources, and then make their own judgments on a given subject.
