Shortly before her death in 1963 the great French singer dictated an autobiographical sketch to journalist Noli. Not intended as a comprehensive history this previously unpublished volume offers affecting and sometimes melodramatic recollections of Piafs celebrated yet tragic life. Chapters about her rise from poverty her philosophical and religious convictions and her legendary generosity are mixed with chapters on aspects of her life that attracted scandal (e.g. love affairs drug addiction alcoholism profligate lifestyle etc.). Believing in her eternal quest for love Piaf defends herself without apology. Translator Crosland who wrote the first non-French biography of Piaf (Piaf LJ 10/1/85) clarifies the text fills in gaps and tempers exaggerations in a series of end notes. This touching romantic memoir is recommended for general audiences.
