A few seconds more and I felt the brakes screech and the car veer wildly. I was slung against the door as we turned off the highway. Roy had found a side road and was tearing down it at break-neck speed, lights off. The cops realized we had turned, however, and were still in hot pursuit, lights on. "Theyre gaining," Roy reported. "Get ready to quit the car when you feel me hit the next corner." A shot rang out. A second and then a third. The car began careening wildly. Im not sure how Roy managed to keep it upright. Before I realized we had stopped. Roy pushed me from the car and catapulted me across a fence into a clump of bushes. Grabbing my hand he started dragging me out of range., in case there was more gunfire. By this time the police car had slid to a stop in back of ours. We looked back. Nothing except a cloud of dust was visible. As we looked back we ran head-on into an irrigation ditch and plunged into waist-deep water. "Come Out! Come out or well shoot!" came menacing command from the police car. I was ready to come out but a restraining hand held me back.
