About this book
Nothing that we do in worship is more important than Communion. Nothing can do more to make Communion meaningful than a thoughtful and appropriate meditation. What is needed is a meditation that interprets the Supper for the visitor who may not be familiar with it and at the same time re-interprets it for the person who is very familiar with it. Sometimes it tells us what we already know but tells it in a different way. Sometimes it tells us what we know and have been unable to put into words. Sometimes the meditation will speak of things we once knew but have forgotten. It is obviously difficult to say something fresh about Communion fifty-two times a year. The subject is always the same. While it is difficult it is not impossible. This book shows us that. The Lords Supper is a many-faceted diamond and there are more than enough faces for the fifty-two Sundays of the year. With this book as a guide it should be possible for any person to give a Communion meditation and say something that is not predictable and yet is appropriate both in content and in tone. For all that undertake this task there are some rules. Such meditations should always be brief. There should be no throwaway lines. Every word should be carefully chosen. Every sentence should relate to the topic. And reverence should be the constant keynote. This book will help enormously to raise the level of this part of our worship. The authors bring two different viewpoints to this meditation. One is an elder. One is a preacher. In a sense we hear a voice from the pulpit and a voice from the pew. While the Communion is in a sense the same for all worshipers we do view it differently.
