About this book

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: Anatomy of a Pestilence by Robert N. Philip. Paperback edition. ISBN: 9780912299969.

Dr. Philips association with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever began because of family exposure, which impressed the need to record the history and activity associated with solving the spotted fever problem in Western Montana. The story has been told many times piecemeal. An overall view of the story during the early years of activities at the Rocky Mountain Laboratory was a stimulus for writing this book. The more that he became immersed in the story, the greater his respect for the many scientific and investigative efforts of these early state and federal health workers. it became his conviction that the history of spotted fever in Western Montana needed to be recorded before it dimmed with the passage of time. Dr. Philips received his M.D. from the University of California in San Francisco in 1948 and served his internship at the Gorgas Hospital in the Panama Canal Zone the following year. In 1953 he earned a Masters Degree in Public Health from Harvard University. He began his career in the United States Public Health Service at Bethesda, Maryland in 1949, served in the Arctic Health Service Research Center in Anchorage, Alaska, from 1956 to 1960. In 1960 he was assigned to the Rocky Mountain Laboratory with a specialty in Entomology and Infectious Disease, including Rickettsial cause. He retired from active service in 1982.
