Roots has by now become somewhat of a classic among those knowledgeable in complementary and alternative medicine. It is based on a collection of papers presented at a 1983 symposium to honor Linus Pauling, plus additional manuscripts. While most of the original symposium presentations by colleagues and admirers of Dr. Pauling appear in the book, additional chapters have been included that significantly broaden its scope. The book is divided into three sections: Biochemistry of Disease, Nutrition and Health, and The Scientist as Citizen. The latter category includes personal views of Dr. Paulings social and political activism, plus Paulings thoughts on the future of orthomolecular medicine.
