About this book

Sashiko Style: Traditional Japanese Patterns for Contemporary Design by Joie Staff. paperback edition. ISBN: 9784889962147.

Sashiko is a traditional and distinctive form of embroidery characterized by running stitches ("little stabs") typically in white thread on indigo-blue fabric. Originally used by Japanese farmers to quilt together several layers of fabric for warmth and durability, sashiko patterns are increasingly being adapted as decorative elements in contemporary designs and needlecraft projects. Sashiko Style presents 70 different patterns of three types: linear, curvy and single-stitch ("hitome zashi") patterns. Full-color photos showcase the many different ways in which the patterns can be used to make beautiful and useful items such as napkins, tablecloths, placemats and runners; tote bags; pillows; curtains and wall hangings. The book introduces basic skills that even beginners can master and includes detailed equipment lists with photos, as well as step-by-step instructions for pattern drafting. A special feature of Sashiko Style is the handy, pullout pattern template insert.
