This book grew out of research for a previous book. The Dalton Gang Story. While doing the research for that book the author became increasingly fascinated with the lawmen involved in tracking down the Daltons and the Doolin gang. Early in her research on the Daltons she began to notice discrepancies in some of the statements made by Chris Madsen. She, fact, quickly discovered that Chris told two or three versions of the same story.It also became clear that Chris would have to have been in two or three places at the same time. The author decided to more research on Chris, originally intending to write a book just about Chris Madsen. As the research progressed it became clear that the lives of four of the early lawmen of the Twin Territories (The Oklahoma Territory and the Indian Territory, the area that is today the state of Oklahoma) were closely entwined.
