Over the years, I have asked thousands of participants in my leadership workshops an important question: How do you define the key activities of leadership? Many participants answer that a successful leader is the primary visionary for the organization, while others point to leaders as motivators, risk takers and delegators. Still others view leaders as masterful communicators, reflective thinkers and energetic forces who have the power to drive their organizations forward. As a leadership coach, I develop agile, competent and energetic leaders. Throughout my coaching career, I have discovered that fit leaders possess four common threads that weave together to form 40 essential leadership traits. I call these four threads the Four Faces of Leadership FitnessTM. In this book, I explain these four common threads and the 40 primary leadership traits in greater detail. Leadership Fitness is an integrated model of leadership development. I created this model based on my 20+ years of personal leadership experience and over 10 years of professionally coaching and training high-potential leaders. After spending many years working with promising leaders, a colleague suggested that I document my philosophy on developing leadership talent. This was an excellent suggestion because it forced me to really think about what I was doing in my practice to create sustainable success for the individuals and the organizations I had the privilege to serve. As I embarked on this process of defining a unique approach to developing leaders, something incredible happened a handful of very specific leadership foundations surfaced. I identified four crucial components of leadership success that create long-term impact for leaders and their organizations: clarity, confidence, effectiveness and vitality. When leaders consistently demonstrate all four of these leadership qualities, I call them fit leaders.
