About this book
The frugal colonial housewife: A cook's book, wherein the art of dressing all sorts of viands with cleanliness, decency, and elegance is explained by Susannah Carter. paperback edition. ISBN: 9780385112598.
The Frugal Colonial Housewife or Complete Woman Cook by Susannah Carter was the only cookbook printed in this country between 1742 and 1796, a period that included both the late Colonial and the early years of these United States. In this book we have reset the type from Miss Carters book for readability and have added a generous serving of illustrations and captions, as well as a glossary to clarify the meaning of words no longer in common usage. The original title page and the two plates engraved by Paul Revere are reproduced here exactly as they were in 1772 when the book was first published. Language and spelling are left as they were written two hundred years ago.
