When Annabella Lagrange was seven, she passed beyond the forbidden oak door barring her way to her fathers apartments and watched as he seduced a woman who was not her mother. The next day, her nursemaid was dismissed for calling Arabella a bastard. Now at eighteen, Annabella learns the whole of the dark secret of her birth. No one can soothe the hurt, the humiliation raging within her-not even Manuel, her fathers servant who has hidden his love until now. Fleeing Redford Hall, determined to find her real mother, Annabella journeys into the working-class world and into the gypsy life. Her heart is to break many times before love makes it whole again.
