About this book

Turning Turtles in Tortuguero: Stories From the Origins of Sea Turtle Research by Anne E Ake. paperback edition. ISBN: 9780991125302.

Turning Turtles in Tortuguero: Stories From the Origins of Sea Turtle Research follows the worlds longest running sea turtle research and conservation program from its conception to the present. In 1955, Dr. Archie Carr began the program in Tortuguero, a tiny isolated village on Costa Ricas Caribbean coast. In 1956 he sent Larry Ogren there to run the program. This book chronicles Larrys adjustment to life in a village with no roads, no running water or electricity, and limited contact with the rest of the world. As Larry and later biologists built a body of knowledge about sea turtles, the village learned that they could survive and prosper by not eating the turtles. Today the turtle research station is part of an international organization devoted to the study and conservation of the sea turtle, and the village is a popular eco-tourism destination. There are still no roads to Tortuguero and the only motorized vehicles are boats.
