Fort Douaumont: Verdun (Battleground Europe)

It is estimated that during the 11 months over which the battle of Verdun took place there were 700 000 casualties and yet the area over which the battle was fought covered a front of less than 10 kilometers. The French Army has never experienced greater sacrifice and today Verdun remains the focus of Frances WW1 commemorations. Fort Douaumonts most significant part in the battle came after 9 months of fighting in October 1916 when following a highly successful bombardment by the French forces the German forces were compelled to retreat from the Fort or what was left of it. During the assault French forces fired 240 000 grenades per day over 3 days.
