In this book James Hunter shows how the Highlands and Islands of Scotland have evolved into the way they are now. Their more recent history has consisted mainly of attempts to regain freedoms and rights of which they were deprived in the Middle Ages and afterwards. Those attempts are succeeding this book argues should be encouraged by Scotlands new government.
