Loewy designed this book and chose the photos in it to celebrate the completion of his new Pennsylvania Railroad streamliner and to satisfy his "irresistible craving to sketch and dream locomotives." Each photo has a caption by Loewy often humorous or sardonic assessing the success or failure of the streamlining efforts of railroads from around the world.
